Intent score: buying intent on social media
Every match is scored 0 to 100 for buying intent with the reason written out, plus a tag for who is talking: buyer, customer, feature request, or rival user.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
An intent score is a number from 0 to 100 that says how close a public post is to someone actually choosing a product like yours. Oetzi scores every match it finds and writes out the reason in a sentence, so you can see why a post ranked where it did. It also tags who is talking, which changes what you should do next.
What does an intent score of 0 to 100 mean?
It ranks how ready the person is, not how loud the post is. Someone whose contract ends this month, asking what people moved to, sits at the top. Someone asking how a category works sits in the middle. Someone mentioning the category in passing sits near the bottom.
The score comes from a rubric compiled from your own sentence describing the conversation you want. When you set up a signal in social listening, Oetzi turns that sentence into native searches per platform and into the rubric that scores what comes back. Change the sentence and the scoring changes with it.
Why does every score come with a written reason?
Because a number you cannot argue with is a number you stop trusting. Each match carries a sentence explaining the score: what in the post suggested buying intent, or what disqualified it. That does two things. It lets you decide in a second whether to open the thread, and it tells you how to fix the signal when the score is wrong.
This is the difference between scoring and filtering. A filter drops posts silently and you never learn what it dropped. A written reason is auditable. Over a week or two you learn which phrasings your buyers use, and you tighten the sentence that drives the sweep.
Who is talking, a buyer or a competitor user?
Each match gets one of four tags, and the tag decides the next move.
- Buyer: someone evaluating or asking for a recommendation. Answering fast matters more than answering perfectly.
- Current customer: someone already using you, in public. Worth a reply whether the post is praise or a complaint, because the room sees which one you answered.
- Feature request: someone describing a gap. That goes to the roadmap, and a reply saying it is on the list is often the whole win.
- Competitor user: someone using a rival and unhappy about it. That is its own play, covered on the competitor report page.
Without the tag, all four look identical in a keyword feed. With it, a single inbox sorts into four different jobs.
What do I do with a high intent match?
Reply, in public, quickly. Oetzi drafts two reply variants in your voice and holds them for your approval, covered on the replies page. Nothing posts without you. Answering the what do you use thread inside the hour is a one click play, because timing is most of the value.
Matches arrive in an inbox, in Slack when connected, and by text, so a high scoring thread reaches you while the person is still deciding. Reading the inbox is free. What costs credits is the sweep that produced the match: 2 credits for one signal across every platform, refunded when nothing qualifies. Prices are on the pricing page.
Questions
What is an intent score?
An intent score is a number from 0 to 100 attached to a public post, estimating how close the writer is to buying something in your category. Oetzi scores every match a sweep returns against a rubric built from your own description of the conversation, and attaches a sentence explaining the score so you can check the reasoning.
How does buying intent monitoring on social media work?
You describe the conversation you want in one sentence. That sentence is compiled into native searches for X, Reddit, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Hacker News, and Substack Notes, plus a scoring rubric. Each match that comes back is scored 0 to 100, tagged for who is talking, and dropped into an inbox with the reason for the score attached.
What are the who is talking tags?
Four: buyer, current customer, feature request, and competitor user. They separate an evaluation thread from a support moment, a roadmap item, and a chance to talk to somebody unhappy with a rival. The tag comes with the match, so a mixed inbox sorts into distinct jobs without you reading every thread first.
Can I tune the scoring?
Yes, by editing the sentence that defines the signal. The rubric is compiled from it, so a tighter description produces tighter scoring on the next sweep. The written reason on each match tells you which way to tighten, since it names what in the post drove the number up or down.
