What is marketing autopilot?
Marketing autopilot is software publishing or replying without you approving each item. What is safe to automate, what is not, and why approval is the default.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
Marketing autopilot is any setup where software publishes, replies, or spends on your behalf without you approving each item first. Scheduling a post you already wrote is a mild version. Letting a model write and publish a reply in your name while you sleep is the strong version, and both are sold under the same word. The useful question is never whether a tool has autopilot, it is which step stopped requiring a human.
What can safely run on autopilot?
The reversible and the unattributed. Searching, scoring, translating, measuring, and researching cost you nothing when they are wrong, because nobody sees the output until you do. This is why a good setup automates everything up to the point of publication and stops there. A steady posting cadence is easier to hold when the first draft is already waiting.
What should never run on autopilot?
Anything said in your name to a person. An automatic reply in a community thread is the highest risk action in marketing software, because it is public, attributable, and often wrong in a way a model cannot detect. Rooms notice quickly, moderators remove the account, and the damage lands on the founder rather than on the vendor who shipped the feature. Spending is the other one. Anything that costs money should quote first and run only against a limit you set, which is also how agent interfaces like the Model Context Protocol are best wired.
Why is autopilot off by default in Oetzi?
Because the default should be the safe one, and because most of the value survives without it. Oetzi drafts replies and posts, and nothing goes out until you approve it. Auto publishing for scheduled posts exists, and it is off until you turn it on. A missed post costs a day, while a wrong post published in your voice costs the room. Keeping the voice yours is the premise of founder led marketing, and a voice doc makes approval fast rather than removing it.
Questions
Is scheduling the same as autopilot?
Not really. Scheduling moves the timing of something you already decided to publish. Autopilot moves the decision itself. The confusion is common because both are sold as automation, and the difference only becomes visible when a post goes out that you would not have written.
Can AI replies be automated safely anywhere?
On your own posts, within limits. Answering a comment under something you published is lower risk than arriving in a stranger's thread, and even there a draft you approve is better. In someone else's community, automated replies are the behavior that gets accounts banned, whatever the tool promises.
What should I automate first?
Finding and drafting. Let software watch the platforms, sort what it finds, and put a first draft in front of you. That removes the two tasks founders actually skip, searching and starting, while keeping every published word yours. The publish step stays a decision you make.
