What is a buying intent signal?
A buying intent signal is a public post showing someone is actively choosing what to buy. What they look like, where they appear, and how to answer one well.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
A buying intent signal is a public statement that shows someone is actively choosing what to buy, rather than idly interested in the topic. "We are moving off Zendesk next month, what are people using" is a buying intent signal. "Customer support is hard" is not. The difference matters because the first sentence has a decision behind it and a deadline attached.
What does a buying intent signal look like?
The strong ones share a few shapes. Someone asks a group for a recommendation. Someone complains about a tool by name and asks what else exists. Someone announces a migration, a funding round, or a new hire who owns the problem. The weak ones look similar but have no decision in them: news links, hot takes, hiring posts, and anyone teaching the topic rather than solving it. An intent score exists to separate the two at volume.
Where do buying intent signals show up?
In public conversation, mostly outside the places a marketing team watches. Reddit threads, Hacker News comments, LinkedIn replies, X quote posts, small Slack and Discord rooms, and the comment sections of newsletters. Hacker News publishes guidelines asking for substance over promotion, which describes how any of these rooms treat a vendor who arrives with a pitch. A large share of the signal never becomes visible at all, because the real conversation happens in a group chat. That part is dark social, and the visible posts are its edge.
How do you act on a buying intent signal?
Answer the question that was asked, in the thread, while it is open. Disclose that you built one of the options in the same sentence you name it. Do not message the person privately, and do not follow up twice. Signals about customers leaving a competitor age quickly, which is the point of the post on public churn warnings.
Questions
Is a buying intent signal the same as an inbound request?
No. An inbound request comes to you and names you. A buying intent signal is a public post that never mentions you and was not addressed to a vendor at all. That is why it needs finding, and why the reply has to earn its place in someone else's conversation.
How long does a buying intent signal stay useful?
Hours for recommendation threads, days for complaints, weeks for migration announcements. The people who answer a "what should we use" thread in the first hour set the shortlist for everyone who reads it later, including readers who arrive months afterward through search or an AI answer.
Can I track buying intent signals without a tool?
Yes, for one or two platforms. Saved searches, a subreddit tab, and fifteen minutes a morning cover a narrow category. It stops working when you need seven platforms, several phrasings each, and a way to skip the noise, which is where social listening starts paying for itself.
Oetzi is an AI marketer for founders who need users. It finds the threads where people ask for a product like yours on seven platforms, checks whether the AI engines recommend you, and drafts replies, posts, and short video in your voice. You approve everything. 100 credits included, 10 free to try with no card, 50 bonus credits with the first payment.
