What is founder led marketing?
Founder led marketing is marketing done in the founder's own name and voice, in public. Why it works early, what it looks like weekly, and when it stops.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
Founder led marketing is marketing done in the founder's own name and voice, in public, instead of through a brand account, an agency, or a hired marketer. The founder writes the posts, answers the questions, and shows the work. It is the default for small products because it is the only channel a two person company can run credibly on day one.
Why does founder led marketing work?
Because people trust a person more than a logo, and because a founder can answer questions no marketer can. When someone asks why your product does not do X, a founder can say "because it would make the setup worse, here is the tradeoff" and be believed. Hacker News asks in its guidelines for comments with substance and curiosity rather than promotion, and a founder explaining a real decision passes that test in a way an ad never does.
What does founder led marketing look like week to week?
Mostly answering. A few hours spread across the week in the rooms where your buyers already talk, plus two or three posts of your own. The posts come from real material: a thing you shipped, a mistake you made, a number you can share, a question a customer asked twice. The rooms come from choosing a presence and keeping it. The writing stays consistent because you wrote a voice doc once instead of rediscovering your tone every morning.
When does founder led marketing stop working?
When it is the only channel and the founder runs out of hours. It scales with attention, and attention is the scarcest thing in a company of two, so the failure mode is three good weeks followed by silence during a release. The fix is to lower the cost per post rather than hand the voice to someone else. Founders who outsource the voice usually lose the thing that made it work. The posting cadence that survives is the one built around a bad month.
Questions
Does founder led marketing need a big following?
No. A post read by two hundred of the right people in a narrow community does more than a viral post read by everyone else. Early on, almost all of the value comes from replies in other people's threads, where the audience is borrowed rather than built.
What should a founder post about?
What you are actually doing. Decisions and their reasons, numbers you are willing to share, mistakes with the correction attached, and answers to questions customers keep asking. Avoid commentary on topics you have no stake in, which reads as filler and is the first thing an audience learns to skip.
Can founder led marketing be handed over later?
Partly. The rooms, the research, and the drafting can move to someone else once there is a documented voice and a working rhythm. The public answers usually cannot so most companies keep a founder in the thread long after they stop writing every post.
