What is emerging trend detection?
Emerging trend detection finds the topics rising in a stream of conversations before they peak, by velocity against a normal week. How it works and how to use it.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
Emerging trend detection is the practice of spotting topics that are rising in a stream of conversations before they peak. The measure is velocity, not volume: how many people are saying a thing this week compared with how many usually do. A topic with forty posts that normally gets forty is background. A topic with twelve posts that normally gets two is emerging, and it is the one worth writing about today, because the audience is already leaning in and nobody has written the definitive take yet.
How emerging trend detection works
Three steps, whatever the tool. First, group the conversations by meaning rather than by keyword, so "our LinkedIn reach fell off a cliff" and "impressions down 60% since the algorithm change" land in the same pile. Modern tools do this with embeddings, a numeric fingerprint of what a post means, and cluster posts whose fingerprints sit close together. Second, count each cluster's posts in the current window and compare with its average over the trailing weeks. Third, rank by the ratio, weighted a little by size so a cluster of three does not outrank a cluster of thirty. The output is a short list of topics, each with the posts behind it and who is posting them.
Why velocity beats volume
Volume rewards evergreen subjects and big accounts. The most-discussed topic in any niche this week is usually the same as last week, which makes it a poor prompt for a post that wants attention. Velocity rewards change. A buying intent signal that fires ten times more than usual is news in your market, and a post that joins that conversation gets read because readers are already looking for it.
Using it for content
The point of a trend is the bridge: one honest sentence from what people are saying to the problem you solve. A rising thread about deliverability is worth a post from an email tool and worthless to a design tool, so the trend has to be scored against who you sell to before it becomes a draft. Oetzi's Trending page clusters the last seven days of conversations every night, scores each cluster for fit with your buyers, and shows who is talking and five example posts. Adding one to Topics puts it on the list the posting plan drafts from first.
Questions
Is emerging trend detection the same as social listening?
No. Social listening watches for named things: your brand, a competitor, a phrase. Emerging trend detection watches the whole stream for whatever is changing, named or not. Listening tells you when someone mentions you. Trend detection tells you what everyone is about to be talking about.
How is it different from a trending hashtags list?
A hashtags list is a popularity chart across the whole platform, which is why it is dominated by sports and celebrities. Emerging trend detection runs on the conversations that matter to one audience, ranks by change rather than size, and comes with the posts behind each topic so a claim can be checked.
