What is social listening?
Social listening is watching public conversations for the moments that matter to your product. What it covers, how to set it up, and how it differs from alerts.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
Social listening is the practice of watching public conversations across social platforms and communities for the moments that matter to your product: someone choosing a tool, someone complaining about a competitor, someone describing the problem you solve. Classic social listening was built for brands measuring sentiment at scale. For a founder it is narrower and more useful, because the goal is not a chart, it is a conversation you can answer today.
How is social listening different from a keyword alert?
A keyword alert is a trigger. Social listening is a system. Listening decides which appearances are worth your attention, on which platforms, in which phrasings, and what to do next. The practical difference is the sorting step: every match gets an intent score and a tag for who is talking, so a buyer choosing right now does not arrive in the same pile as a competitor's press release. The honest taxonomy of the tools in this space is in this post.
How do you set up social listening?
Describe the conversation in one plain sentence before you write a single query. "People choosing an error tracking tool because theirs got expensive" is a workable description. "Error tracking" is not, it is a topic. From the description, write native searches per platform, because each one has its own syntax and its own culture. Reddit rewards long questions and punishes vendors who arrive selling. LinkedIn hides most of the interesting replies one click down. Then backfill the last week before going live, so you can see what your searches would have caught.
What does social listening miss?
Everything private, which is most of it. The recommendation in a group chat, the DM that decided the purchase, and the internal Slack thread are all dark social, and Alexis Madrigal's original piece is still the clearest explanation of why they never reach a dashboard.
Questions
Is social listening the same as social monitoring?
Monitoring usually means watching mentions of your own brand. Listening is broader: the category, the competitors, the problem, and the people asking about any of them. A small product has almost no brand mentions to monitor, which is exactly why listening is the version that works before you are well known.
How many listening signals does one product need?
Usually one per thing you sell, plus one for your main competitors. Founders who set up a dozen at once end up reading none of them. Start with the single conversation you most want to be in, tune it for a week until the matches are worth reading, and add the next only when the first runs clean.
Does social listening work in other languages?
Yes, if your searches include the right phrasings and the tool translates what it finds. A buying question asked in German or Portuguese is as real as one asked in English, and those threads tend to have far fewer vendors answering them.
