Does Gemini recommend your product? How to check

How Gemini answers what should I use for X, how Google's index shapes what it cites, how to check whether it names you, and what moves the answer.

Gemini answers buying questions with one foot in Google's index, so the pages that rank for your category tend to be the pages it repeats. Asking once tells you little, because the answer varies with phrasing and grounding. Track the same buying questions on a schedule and count how often you are named, which is your share of model.

How does Gemini answer "what should I use for X"?

Gemini can answer from the model alone or ground the answer in a live Google search. When it grounds, it retrieves results, reads them, and writes a summary with source links, and the set of sources usually resembles the first page of Google for a query close to yours.

That has a practical upside. The SEO work you already did is not wasted, since ranking for "best X for Y" still feeds the answer. It also means an unranked product stays invisible no matter how good it is, which is the gap worth closing.

Gemini also sits inside other Google surfaces, so the same answer shape reaches people who never open a chat window.

What does Gemini cite?

Pages that rank, mostly. Roundups and comparisons, documentation, established publications, and Google properties including YouTube. Community threads appear less often than they do in Perplexity answers, though Reddit still shows up for questions where a forum is clearly the best source.

Grounding links are sometimes wrapped in a redirect, so the visible citation is not always the destination. What matters is which page won, not the shape of the link. Each of those is an AI citation working for whoever is named inside it.

How to check whether Gemini recommends your product

Use the questions buyers type, not your brand name. Oetzi asks each tracked question to Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI on a schedule, shows who was named instead of you, and lists the threads and pages each answer cited. Two credits per question across all five engines, and the first check runs during setup so you start with a baseline.

Run Gemini alongside Google AI Overviews rather than instead of it. They draw on the same index and often disagree, and the difference tells you whether your problem is ranking or phrasing.

What actually moves the Gemini answer

Rank for the comparison query. A page that names your category, states your pricing and limits, and says who you are not for is the kind of page grounding pulls, and it is also the page a human buyer wanted.

Be in the sources that already rank. If three roundups own your category, being included honestly in them moves more than another post on your own blog.

Name yourself consistently, one product name with one category phrase, everywhere you control. Grounded answers repeat the description they find most often, so five different descriptions is five weak signals instead of one clear one.

Questions

Does Gemini use Google Search results?

It can ground answers in live Google results and cite the pages it used. That is why its recommendations often track what ranks for your category, and why ordinary search work still pays off. It can also answer from the model without grounding, which is slower to change, so track the same question repeatedly rather than trusting one response.

Why does Gemini recommend my competitor instead of me?

Usually because your competitor is on the pages it read and you are not. Look at the sources under an answer that names them. If the same roundups and comparison pages keep appearing and you are absent from all of them, that is the work. If you are present but described vaguely, the fix is clearer wording on your own pages.

Is tracking Gemini different from tracking ChatGPT?

Yes, and that is the reason to track more than one. Gemini leans on Google's index, ChatGPT leans on its own searches and its training, Grok leans on posts. The same question gets different names from each, so a single engine check gives a misleading picture of how visible you are.
