Does Google AI recommend your product? How to check

How Google AI Overviews answer what should I use for X, which pages they cite, how to check whether they name you, and what moves the summary over time.

By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi

Google AI Overviews sit on top of the normal search results, so for many buying questions they are the first and sometimes the only thing a buyer reads. Being named in that summary matters more than the blue link below it. Check by asking your category's buying questions on a schedule and counting how often you appear, which is your share of model.

How do Google AI Overviews answer "what should I use for X"?

Google generates a short summary above the results and links out to the pages it drew from, which the company described when it brought generative answers to Search. The summary does not appear for every query, and it shows up more often for questions phrased as questions than for single keywords.

The important part for a founder is the position. The overview answers the question before anyone scrolls, so a product named in the summary gets considered and a product ranked fourth below it often does not.

What do Google AI Overviews cite?

Pages that already do well for the query, mostly. Comparison posts and roundups, documentation, established publications, retailer and vendor pages, and forum threads for questions where people clearly want opinions. The linked sources sit beside the summary, so you can read them the way you would read a citation list.

Ranking and being cited are not the same thing. A page can rank first and go unmentioned while a page from position seven supplies the sentence. That gap is why tracking the summary separately from your rankings is worth doing.

How to check whether Google AI recommends your product

Write the questions your buyers actually type. Oetzi asks each tracked question to Google AI, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok on a schedule, shows who was named instead of you, and lists the threads and pages each answer cited. Two credits per question across all five engines, and the first check runs during setup.

Read the Google AI result next to the Gemini result. They pull from the same index and often name different products, and the disagreement usually points at whether your problem is which pages rank or how those pages describe you.

What actually moves the Google AI answer

Answer the question on a page, in the first paragraph, in the words people use. Summaries are assembled from pages that state an answer plainly, not from pages that build up to one.

Be in the sources it already cites. When the same three roundups supply every overview in your category, the honest route in is being included in them, and the fastest way to be included is to be a product people are talking about.

Name yourself consistently. One product name, one category phrase, the same on your site, your docs, and your posts. Summaries repeat the description they see most. This is the patient half of generative engine optimization, and it compounds.

Questions

No. They appear for some queries and not others, and the pattern changes over time. Questions phrased in full sentences, especially comparison and recommendation questions, trigger them more often than short keywords. That is a reason to track your real buying questions rather than your head terms, since those are the searches where a summary decides what gets considered.

How is Google AI different from Gemini?

Google AI Overviews are the summaries inside search results, while Gemini is the chat product. Both draw on Google's index, but the framing, the length, and the cited pages differ, so the same question can produce two different recommendations. Tracking both is worth the effort, since buyers meet the search summary far more often than they open a chat.

What do I do when the overview names only big vendors?

Look at what it cited. If every source is a roundup that only covers large vendors, your work is getting into those roundups or creating the comparison page that covers the narrow version of the question they ignore. Specific questions are easier to win than broad ones, and specific questions are what buyers close to a decision actually type.
