What is an AI citation?

An AI citation is the source link an AI engine attaches to a claim in its answer. Why citations matter more than mentions, which engines show them, and how to earn one.

By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi

An AI citation is the source an AI engine points to when it answers a question, shown as a numbered footnote, an inline link, or a list of pages under the answer. When Perplexity says "teams often recommend X for social listening" and links a Reddit thread, that thread is the AI citation. It is the closest thing generative engines have to a ranking, because the cited page is the one the engine trusted enough to name.

Why AI citations matter more than mentions

A mention puts your name in the answer. A citation puts a page about you in front of the buyer, with a link they can click. Citations also tell you where the engine's opinion comes from. If three engines all cite the same comparison thread, that thread is shaping your share of model, and fixing or answering it is worth more than any page on your own site. The GEO paper found that pages carrying their own citations and statistics were more likely to be cited in turn, which is a useful hint about what engines reward.

Which engines show AI citations

Perplexity cites on nearly every answer. Google AI Overviews show source cards. ChatGPT cites when it searches and rarely when it answers from memory. Gemini and Grok vary by mode. Because of this, a citation audit has to run per engine. Oetzi's share of model check records the cited threads and pages for each engine next to the naming rate, so the list of sources becomes a list of places to show up.

How to earn an AI citation

Be the page or thread that answers the question directly. For your own site that means a plain definition in the first sentence, specific numbers, and links to primary sources. For community threads it means a disclosed, helpful reply in the thread that already ranks, since engines retrieve from the same web that search indexes. The practice as a whole is generative engine optimization.

Questions

Do AI citations send traffic?

Some. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews show clickable sources and a share of readers follow them. The larger effect is indirect: a buyer reads your name in the answer and searches for it later, which shows up in analytics as a branded search rather than as a referral from the engine.

Can I see which pages ChatGPT cites about my category?

Only by asking. Ask the buying questions your customers type, with browsing on, and record the sources ChatGPT shows. Repeat on a schedule because answers vary between runs. Tools that automate this, including Oetzi, run the same loop across several engines and keep the history.

Why does an engine cite a thread instead of my documentation?

Engines weight what other people say above what a vendor says about itself, and community threads rank well for "best X for Y" queries. A thread with several independent voices reads as evidence. Your documentation reads as a claim. Being present in the thread is usually the faster fix.

Oetzi is an AI marketer for founders who need users. It finds the threads where people ask for a product like yours on seven platforms, checks whether the AI engines recommend you, and drafts replies, posts, and short video in your voice.
