Track the people who engage with competitor posts

How to pull the people who liked, replied to, or quoted a competitor post, tag them, and decide which public conversation is worth joining next.

By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi

When a competitor posts and forty people react, that list is a map of their market and yours. The people graph pulls everyone who engaged with a post, likes, reposts, quotes, replies, and comments, so you see who is paying attention. It is 1 credit per post, refunded when fewer than three come back.

Why does the crowd under a competitor post matter?

Because most people evaluating a product never post anything. They read, they like, they follow. A thread with eight comments might have sixty likes, and those sixty are a quieter, larger version of the same audience.

The list is easy to read. People who quoted the post are the loudest and usually already have an opinion. People who replied with a question are still deciding. People who only liked it are the ones you would never otherwise see, and they are often the biggest group.

Which competitor posts are worth pulling?

Not the announcements. Pull posts where people had to take a position: a pricing change, a "we shipped this" post where the comments ask about a missing feature, or a thread where a customer complained and the crowd piled on.

A good rule is to pull the post your listening inbox already flagged. Matches arrive scored 0 to 100 with the reason written out and tagged buyer, current customer, feature request, or competitor user, so a high-scoring competitor user thread is a strong candidate. Monitoring competitor complaints finds most of them.

What do I do with the people I pull?

Tag them, and keep tagging over weeks. The value is not one list, it is the same names appearing under three different competitor threads, which tells you who is in market. Outreach is recorded so nobody contacts the same person twice, and that record is shared with Slack and with any agent on the workspace.

Then act in public. Reply in the thread they engaged with, or write a post about the question the crowd was asking, because a post that answers forty people at once beats forty replies. Drafts come in your voice, and nothing goes out without approval.

Resolving one person to a verified contact is 1 credit, a miss is free. That is for someone you have a reason to contact, not for building a list. Oetzi never messages strangers and never scrapes a list.

What does tracking competitor engagers cost in credits?

People graph reads are free. Pulling the people who engaged with a post is 1 credit, refunded when fewer than three come back, so a dead post is free. Tagging, recording outreach, and presence discovery are free.

Four pulls a week is about 16 credits a month against the 100 included with the $49 plan. The listening that finds posts worth pulling is 2 credits per sweep of one signal across every platform, refunded when nothing qualifies. The people graph page covers what a pull returns.

Questions

How do I see who engaged with a competitor's post?

Point the people graph at the post and it returns the people who liked, reposted, quoted, replied, or commented, for 1 credit, refunded when fewer than three come back. Tag those people, watch for the same names across several competitor threads, and record any outreach so nobody at your company approaches the same person twice.

Is pulling an engagement list the same as scraping a list?

No. A pull returns the public engagement on one post you chose, so you can decide which conversation to join. There is no bulk export, no unsolicited email, and no private messaging of strangers. What you do with it is reply in public, or write a post that answers the question the crowd was asking.

Should I message the people who engaged with a competitor?

Not privately, and that is not what this is for. The right move is to be useful in the same public thread, or to write a post about the question those people were asking. Drafts come in your voice and wait for approval, and tracked links plus the outcomes ledger are free, so you see whether the public answer brought anyone back.
