Churn signals on Reddit, before they cancel
How to spot public churn signals from your own customers, sort them by intent and who is talking, and answer before the cancel note turns into a switch.
By Max Gillespie, founder of Oetzi
Customers warn you in public before they cancel, usually in a thread asking peers what else exists. That post is a churn signal, visible days before the cancellation reaches your billing dashboard. Oetzi watches seven platforms for people talking about your product that way, scores each match, and drafts a reply in your voice for approval.
What does a churn signal look like in public?
Three phrasings cover most. Quiet: "has anyone found a good alternative to the tool we use for X, ours has gotten slow". Specific: "we have asked for SSO for a year, at what point do you just move". Loud: "renewal is next month and I cannot justify the price, what are you using".
None are addressed to you, which is why they never reach support. The person is already shopping and collecting reasons.
How do I describe a churn signal in one sentence?
Point it at your own product and the leaving language. Something like "our own customers asking about alternatives, complaining about price, or saying they are close to moving". That becomes native searches per platform plus a scoring rubric, and seven days backfill immediately. Keep it separate from your brand signal, because mixed together the urgent posts get lost under the pleasant ones. Churn warnings are public covers what they look like.
How do the intent score and the who-is-talking tag sort churn?
The tag does most of the work. Every match is tagged buyer, current customer, feature request, or competitor user, and a churn signal is a current customer, or a feature request from someone who already pays you. The 0 to 100 score with the reason written out says how far along they are.
Read current customer tags first. A high-scoring buyer is a customer you might win. A high-scoring current customer is revenue you are about to lose.
What do I do with a churn signal?
Answer it, in the thread, as yourself. Two reply variants are drafted in your voice and nothing goes out without approval. The reply that works acknowledges the gap, says what is true without promising a date, and offers a direct conversation. Never argue with their reasons in public.
Then close the loop. Tag the person, record the outreach so nobody contacts them twice, and let the outcomes ledger record what happened. Feature requests from public threads is the same signal read differently.
What do churn signals cost in credits?
Reading is free, including the inbox and translation, so a warning in another language arrives readable. A sweep of one signal across every platform is 2 credits and refunds when nothing qualifies, so one churn signal swept every weekday is about 40 credits against the 100 included with the $49 plan. Resolving a person to a verified contact is 1 credit and a miss is free, which matters when the account name is not the email in your database. Reddit monitoring covers where most of these appear.
Questions
How do I find churn signals on Reddit before a customer cancels?
Describe the signal as a sentence about your own customers asking for alternatives or naming a missing feature, rather than an alert on your brand name. Matches come back scored 0 to 100 with the reason written out and tagged for who is talking. Sort by the current customer tag, the difference between a stranger browsing and a renewal at risk.
Is answering a churn post in public risky?
Less risky than silence, because the thread already exists and other customers are reading it. Drafts wait for your approval, so you choose every word, and the reply that works is short, specific about the gap, honest about what is planned, and offers to continue privately. A defensive comment reads badly, and so does one a month late.
Can this replace a churn prediction model on my usage data?
No, and it answers a different question. A usage model tells you an account went quiet. A public churn signal tells you why, in the customer's own words, along with which competitors they are considering. The two work together, and only this one gives you something to say.
